Holiday Film Screenings
December 21st, 2012 | Posted by in Events in Queens
If you’re looking for events in queens with which to spend your time off over the holidays, why not check out some of the great films playing in Astoria’s Museum of the Moving Image? MoMI’s popular See it Big! film series is wrapping up for the year, providing the chance to see great classic films the way they were intended: on a large screen, in a theatre and with an appreciate audience. Here’s a couple of the final See it Big! screening events in queens for 2012:
- Fanny and Alexander (December 22-23)
Ingmar Bergman’s four-part family epic is presented at MoMI in its original incarnation, the miniseries version which aired on Swedish television in 1982. Set in the beginning of the 20th century, the film follows a young boy and his sister whose fabulously wealthy family is fractured following the death of their father. Their mother soon finds a new suitor, a handsome widowed bishop, but he may not be all that he seems. This fantastic epic mixes family drama with surrealistic elements, one of the master director’s great works. - La Dolce Vita (December 29-30)
Frederico Fellini’s magnum opus is a dense, sweeping film shot with the playfulness of Fellini’s lighter, more surreal works. Marcello Mastroianni stars as a celebrity columnist who drifts from one party to another until he meets a famous Swedish-American actress, Anita Ekberg. Their breathless love affair takes them throughout Rome before finally ending in a nightmarishly debauched beach house party, one of cinema’s greatest closing scenes.
